How search works

Search reads every transcript, title and show note of this show right here in your browser, and counts every match. Exact Phrase finds the words together and in order, All Words finds episodes with every word somewhere in them, and Any Word finds any one of them. Case, accents and punctuation don’t matter, and a space also matches a hyphen, so “x ray” finds “x-ray”.

Word Starts finds words that begin with what you typed: “moon” also finds “moons”, but not “honeymoon”. Whole Words finds only the word itself, and Inside Words finds it anywhere, even inside other words. A * at the end of a word also finds longer words.

Transcripts are machine-made, so names are often written the way they sound. Sound-Alikes adds those spellings and Word Forms adds forms such as “ran” for “run”, and the results name the ones they found. When nothing matches, search tries other forms of the words, then sound-alikes, then all the words in any order, and says so. Under the count, “Spelled in the transcripts as” lists other spellings the transcripts use, with their counts; tap one to add it.

Advanced takes AND, OR, NOT, parentheses and “quoted phrases”. NEAR finds words within 10 words of each other, or as many as you say with NEAR/20. Regex takes a JavaScript regular expression and ignores case, as in \bcolou?r\b. Regular expressions, NEAR, sound-alikes and complete counts are what this page is for; the search of every show finds episodes across the whole catalogue.

Concordance, next to the count, lists every match on a line of its own with the words around it; sort it by the words before or after, select lines, and Export them as a spreadsheet (CSV) or as quotes with their episode, date and a link.

When few episodes mention what you searched for, the best matches come first; otherwise the newest do, and the Order chip changes that. The strip under an episode is the episode from start to end, with a tick for each match. The first search downloads the transcripts (once), and your browser keeps them, so the next searches are quick. Nothing you type leaves this page.
